Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation is a non-profit foundation that supports child and family life services at four Michigan hospital. These services are not typically covered by insurance but are deemed important in creating an environment to assist in the patient’s recovery. The hospitals are: C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI; Children’s Hospital Foundation, Detroit, MI; Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI; Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Grand Rapids. The Foundation is supported by Kiwanis Club and individuals through annual contributions.
Infant Car Seat/Pack & Play products are supplied to the Beginnings Care for Life Center for their “Earning & Learning Program” that allows participants to earn points while receiving parenting and life-skills education. Points may be exchanged for new baby clothing, diapers, larger baby-care items (such as car seats and strollers) and gift cards.
Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a program sponsored by the United Way of Branch County that mails books to children from birth to age 5. Funding for the program determines the number of children that will receive the free books. The cost is $2.10 per month per child.
Laundromat Literacy places books in local laundromats. The project includes setting up a bookcase, reading mat and stocking the location with books.
Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Council receives the funding from us to provide Safe Sleep books for mothers’ bags and stickers for car seats providing emergency contact information to new mothers delivering at ProMedica Regional Hospital.
🚌Thank you to Sue Coco from Branch ISD for being our guest speaker last week. She told us all about the Early Head Start program which provides services from prenatal to 5 years old. Sue and her team focus on school readiness as well as the health of the baby and the parent. They provide transport to appointments and help parents understand development milestones. They provide a home curriculum to give parents more tools to help them raise their kids. This program is such a great part of our community and helps reduce child abuse and neglect. Thank you, Sue, for giving us this insight! 🚌
Kiwanis meets every Monday. Come learn about community events and programs just like these! Join us tomorrow for our showcase and get the rundown on all things Kiwanis - It's a great meeting to attend.
We learned so much about the area foster care system thanks to our guest speakers this week, Kayla Hinton, a Foster Care Navigator/Recruiter, and Tracy Sweet of the Dept. of Social Services.
The need for foster homes throughout the community is REAL. Currently there are only 9 homes (and 1 respite home) in Branch County and there are 67 children to place. 67!!
YOU CAN HELP! ❤️ Spread the word about the need in our area for foster homes. ❤️ Donate gently used toys, clothes and more to Foster Closet, located across from the Masonic Temple. ❤️ Become a (non-licensed) respite home. Give a family a few days off from their fostering duties. ❤️ Become a licensed foster home and help a child stay within their school system/support group of friends.
